For many women, midlife means restless nights. The menopausal transition reshapes sleep through hormones, hot flashes, mood, and behavior.
Up to half of these women report significant sleep difficulties. About 1 in 4 meet the full criteria for insomnia. The most frequent complaint is waking several times per night and struggling to get back to sleep. Hot flashes and night sweats are triggers, and mood symptoms or stress can intensify the perception of poor rest (1). Other sleep disorder symptoms in women include:

PSG screening may therefore be warranted in women with suspected SDB. The International Consensus Statement (3) and menopause-focused reviews (4) note that Home Sleep Apnea Testing lacks EEG-based sleep staging and may underestimate REM predominant or subtle SDB. A PSG evaluation for OSA should be considered when individuals report snoring together with awakenings from sleep, unrefreshing sleep, and/or daytime sleepiness (2).
